Reading the map
Each section is coloured by its state: green for free-flowing traffic, orange for heavy traffic, red for a congested road, grey when the reading is unusable.
Peaks concentrate on the ring road, its interchanges and the radial roads feeding into it, at the times people enter and leave the urban area. Inside, the roads along the Vilaine and the main boulevards take the strain.
A level of detail that helps cyclists
With close to 2,900 sections described, against a few hundred elsewhere, the Rennes survey is not limited to fast roads: it goes down to the urban streets people actually cycle on.
In practice you can compare two possible ways across the centre rather than merely noting the state of the ring road, and prefer a calmer parallel street of similar length — often along the Vilaine or the canal.
Heavy is not dangerous, free-flowing is not safe
