What the map shows
Each point is a parking spot surveyed by OpenStreetMap contributors. Stands dominate by a wide margin: they are the only equipment that lets you lock both the frame and a wheel with a U-lock.
Racks and wheel benders, which hold only the front wheel, leave a bike exposed to theft and can buckle the rim. Shelters and enclosed lockers appear as a separate category; they cluster around the station, the metro stops and the park-and-ride sites.
A dense area, unevenly served
Close to 2,900 spots are recorded across Rennes Métropole, but their distribution follows that of the activity hubs: the city centre, the Beaulieu and Villejean campuses, and the areas around metro stations. In the outlying towns, provision thins out quickly.
Cycling to a metro station or a railway station is the use that weighs most on parking demand: that is where enclosed shelters make the difference, covering a full day of parking without leaving a bike in the open.
Parking without getting your bike stolen
Lock the frame to a fixed point, never the wheel alone, and use a certified U-lock. Bicycle marking (Bicycode), mandatory on new bikes sold in France since 2021, markedly improves the odds of recovering a stolen bike.
The data comes from OpenStreetMap and is resynchronised automatically: a recently installed stand may be missing, and one that has been removed may linger for a few weeks. Any correction made on OpenStreetMap shows up here after the next sync.
