What the map shows
Each point is a spot surveyed on the ground by OpenStreetMap contributors. Stands dominate: they are the only equipment that lets you lock the frame and a wheel with a U-lock.
Shelters and enclosed boxes appear separately. In Brussels these often take the form of street bike boxes installed in residential districts, shared between residents who register with the municipality or the Region.
Parking in Brussels
Bike theft is common in the capital, particularly around stations and nightlife districts. A certified U-lock, the frame attached to a fixed point, and a busy, lit spot are worth the extra minute.
The terrain deserves attention. Between the lower city and the heights of Ixelles or Saint-Gilles, sloping streets are everywhere: a bike merely resting against a stand tips over more easily than on the flat.

The survey comes from OpenStreetMap and is resynchronised automatically. The Belgian contributor community is very active, and coverage is good.
