What the map shows
Each point is a spot surveyed on the ground by OpenStreetMap contributors. Stands dominate: they are the only equipment that lets you lock the frame and a wheel with a U-lock.
Shelters and enclosed lockers appear separately. In a polycentric area, they cluster around the stations of Lille, Roubaix and Tourcoing rather than in a single centre.
Parking on cobbles
Cobbles are part of daily cycling here, and they shake a bike more than smooth tarmac does. A bike left resting rather than properly secured tips over more easily on uneven ground.
Otherwise the usual rules apply: a certified U-lock, the frame attached to a fixed point, and a busy, lit spot rather than a quiet side street.
Where the data comes from
The survey comes from OpenStreetMap and is resynchronised automatically. A recently installed stand may be missing, and one that has been removed may linger.
