Precision to the month, not the day
Unlike the French data, the Belgian dataset does not publish the exact date of an accident, only the month. Records therefore show a month and a year.
Severity, on the other hand, is recorded: slight injury, hospitalised injury or death. Across the Tournaisis, the vast majority of mapped accidents are slight injuries.
Reading the map with care
As with any accident map, a cluster of points reflects how much cycling happens there as much as how dangerous a place is. Town-centre roads accumulate both.
Only accidents that gave rise to an official report appear in the data. Falls without a third party and minor collisions without injury are absent.
Effect on routes
These accidents are attached to nearby segments and apply a penalty — capped, and decaying over time — to the safety score used by the route planner. The Tournaisis is one of the two areas where that planner works.
